Computers Role in Business
It is a known fact that computers were created to do complex calculations in order to help scientists deal with their work. However, the potential of the computer has been recognized and thus, over time, it was developed in order to be useful for the common consumer. That was how the personal computer was born, which is now very useful to a person’s life and even to the operation of a business.
For example, computers have use in the marketing functions of a business. It is through the computer that the designs used in outdoor advertising are conceptualized, using software for graphic designing like Adobe Photoshop, among others. Also, it is through the computer that marketers are able to do Internet marketing. Marketing articles are written using word processors, and are published using FTP clients to upload these articles unto the company website. The website in turn is also designed using the computer.
Computers are also used in administrative functions of the company. The payroll department, for example, uses custom software to keep track of salaries and to calculate how much an employee will receive on pay day. Calculating payroll deals with many deductions that can take time, but salary officers are more efficient nowadays because of the computers. Salaries are calculated and delivered on time because there are now programs that calculate the values in a lesser span of time than compared to calculating it manually.
Finally, computers act as storage media for the company’s most important files. This does not mean that paperwork and filing cabinets are no longer useful to a company. They still are since hard copies are always needed, but with computers, company personnel now a more secure storage for files that are vital to the company’s operation. Also, with computers, it is easier to reproduce hard copies because the files are simply opened and printed out. There is no more need to retype it like in the old days where files are reproduced by typing them up. Of course, everyone agrees that this mode of reprinting consumes precious time that could otherwise be used in other important tasks.
